People’s Chosen God is a book that I am publishing serially here, one chapter per week. It examines the toxic theology of white American evangelicalism, which exists to maintain a power structure that keeps nominally straight, cis-gender, white Christian men in power—in the home, in the church, and in government.
The name is a play on “God’s chosen people,” a term that white American evangelicals shamelessly appropriated from Jewish people. I chose it to point out that evangelical theology isn’t the faithful application of scripture I was told it was, but rather a structure that was assembled using cherry-picked, out-of-context passages that are interpreted with selective literalism to support already-established beliefs.
I also post other shorter pieces about similar topics for unpaid subscribers. Sometimes these revisit my past experiences in the church. Sometimes they look at the way that evangelicalism has influenced people or society historically. And sometimes they explore relevant current events.
I’d love for you to join me. If you appreciate my work, please consider supporting it financially with a paid substack subscription or a one-time donation.
