Focus on the [White, Christian] Family (with Dr. Audrey Clare Farley)

The Eugenics Roots of "Biblical Family Values"

In the Old Testament, pretty much every man had multiple wives, and God was cool with it. In the New Testament, Jesus downplays the importance of family, and both he and Paul teach that the ideal life is one of single celibacy devoted to serving the Lord. Neither of those resembles the “biblical family values” that evangelicals want to mandate not only for themselves, but for everyone. It turns out that these “biblical family values” have roots not in the Bible, but in white supremacy.

This episode is intended to complement Chapter 5 of People’s Chosen God, a book with chapters being released serially at schadhayes.substack.com. It examines the various forms of harm perpetrated by white evangelical Christianity as it weaponizes the Bible to preserve a power structure where nominally straight, cis-gender, white Christian men are in charge—in the family, in the church, and in government.
